Job Description
Role Overview:
- The Database Architect owns the MySQL data tier of the Backend Platform a Kubernetes-hosted HA cluster managed via MySQL Operator, MySQL Router, and MySQL Nodes serving as the primary datastore for all 8 microservices. The role covers HA/failover design, backup and disaster recovery including point-in-time recovery (PITR), performance tuning, schema governance, and safe migrations.
- During transition, the DB Architect validates cluster health, replication topology, backup/restore procedures, and failover behaviour, and documents the data tier to run-and-maintain standard before independent ownership.
- Own architecture, reliability, and performance of the MySQL HA cluster (MySQL Operator, MySQL Router, MySQL Nodes) on Kubernetes.
- Design, validate, and test HA/failover behavior using MySQL Group Replication / InnoDB Cluster; own failover runbooks.
- Own backup and disaster recovery strategy including scheduled backups, restore drills, and point-in-time recovery (PITR).
- Drive performance tuning: slow-query analysis, indexing strategy, query optimization, connection routing, and resource sizing.
- Review and approve all schema changes; design and execute safe schema migrations with minimal downtime.
- Partner with the Solution Architect and Backend Developers on data modeling, transaction design, and MySQL client best practices.
- Validate DB cluster health during the Shadow & Co-Own phase and document the data tier (topology, configs, runbooks) in Confluence.
- Define capacity plans and growth projections for the data tier.
- Serve as L3/L4 escalation point for data-tier production incidents; lead RCA for database-related outages.
- Integrate database credentials and certificate management with HashiCorp Vault.
- Maintain observability of the data tier: replication lag, cluster state, and performance dashboards/alerts with the SRE.
- 7+ years of database engineering/administration experience with deep MySQL specialization.
- Production experience designing and operating MySQL HA using Group Replication and/or InnoDB Cluster.
- Hands-on experience running MySQL on Kubernetes using database operators (MySQL Operator or equivalent) and MySQL Router.
- Proven backup/restore and DR expertise including PITR (binary log-based recovery) and restore testing.
- Strong performance tuning skills: EXPLAIN analysis, index design, buffer/IO tuning, slow-query remediation.
- Experience designing and executing schema migrations in live production systems.
- Experience troubleshooting replication issues, split-brain scenarios, and failover events.
- Proficiency in SQL at an expert level and in scripting (Bash/Python) for automation.
- Experience with database monitoring and alerting (Prometheus/Grafana or equivalent).
- MySQL certification (Oracle Certified Professional MySQL / OCA / OCP).
- CKA certification or equivalent Kubernetes operational skill.
- Experience with online schema-change tooling (gh-ost, pt-online-schema-change).
- Experience with HashiCorp Vault database secrets engines.
- Telecom or other high-volume B2C domain experience.
- Experience inheriting and documenting a partially documented production data tier.
