Job Title: Senior Performance Engineer, Retail E-commerce
Experience Level: 7 -10 Years
Position Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Lead Performance Engineer to take a leading role in shaping the performance, scalability, and reliability of our e-commerce platform. In this role, you will be responsible for defining performance strategy, leading testing efforts, analyzing complex systems, and mentoring a team of talented engineers. You will be the go-to expert for all things performance-related, ensuring our customers have a seamless and fast shopping experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Performance Strategy Planning:
- Define and drive the end-to-end performance engineering strategy and roadmap for our e-commerce applications.
- Collaborate with architects, developers, and product managers to define Service Level Objectives (SLOs) and Non-Functional Requirements (NFRs) for new and existing features.
- Design and document comprehensive performance test plans and scenarios based on production data and key business flows (e.g., search, browse, catalog,checkout, payment processing).
- Testing Analysis:
- Lead the design, development, and execution of performance, load, stress, and scalability tests.
- Analyze test results to identify performance bottlenecks, memory leaks, and concurrency issues across the entire application stack (frontend, backend, database, APIs).
- Utilize APM tools - Dynatrace and profilers to perform deep-dive analysis and pinpoint root causes of performance degradation.
- Develop and maintain sophisticated performance testing scripts using tools like JMeter, LoadRunner.
- Technical Leadership Mentoring:
- Act as a subject matter expert, providing technical guidance and mentorship to junior and mid-level performance engineers.
- Champion performance engineering best practices and conduct knowledge-sharing sessions with development and QA teams.
- Review code and system designs to proactively identify potential performance issues early in the development lifecycle ("shift-left" performance).
- Drive the evaluation and adoption of new performance engineering tools and technologies.
- Collaboration Reporting:
- Work closely with cross-functional teams, including DevOps and SRE, to troubleshoot production performance issues and optimize infrastructure.
- Communicate performance test results, analysis, and recommendations clearly and concisely to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Create and maintain detailed performance dashboards and reports to track trends and improvements over time.
Required Qualifications Skills
- Experience: 10-15 years of dedicated experience in performance engineering and testing.
- Domain Knowledge: Proven experience working on large-scale, high-traffic retail e-commerce platforms.
- Performance Testing Tools: Expert-level proficiency with industry-standard load testing tools - JMeter, LoadRunner.
- Java Stack Performance Engineering: Deep expertise in core Java performance engineering, including JVM tuning (HotSpot, OpenJDK), Garbage Collection (GC) analysis and optimization, heap memory analysis (heap dumps, profilers), and concurrency/threading management (Java 8 Java 21).
- APM Profiling: Hands-on experience with Application Performance Management (APM tools - Dynatrace) and code profilers.
- Programming/Scripting: Strong scripting skills in languages like Python, Java, or Groovy.
- Cloud Infrastructure: Solid understanding of cloud platforms (AWS) and containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Databases: Experience with performance tuning of both SQL (Microsoft SQL and Oracle ) and NoSQL databases (Cassandra, Astra, PostgreSQL).
- Analytical Skills: Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills with a proven ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues.
- Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead projects, mentor engineers, and influence technical decisions.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Chaos Engineering principles and tools.
- Knowledge of modern web technologies and frontend performance optimization techniques.
- Experience with Kafka and MQ.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and integrating performance tests into the development process.
- Relevant cloud or performance engineering certifications.
