JAVA Backend Engineer Lead

Job Purpose

Understand business and technical requirements in detail and perform backend engineering tasks to design, build and maintain Java 21 / Spring Bootbased APIs, microservices and related batch processes for critical retail banking journeys in Enterprise Factory, Bangalore.

Job Responsibilities(JR) :

• Design, develop and maintain Java 21 / Spring Bootbased microservices and batch programs, meeting agreed quality, performance and timeliness goals.
• Translate functional and non-functional requirements into robust RESTful APIs, service contracts and domain models aligned with microservices principles.
• Implement secure, resilient and observable services, including structured logging, metrics and exception handling, in line with bank security and compliance standards.
• Collaborate with architects, product owners, business analysts and QA to refine user stories, estimate effort and ensure end-to-end delivery quality.
• Participate in and contribute to peer code reviews, enforcing coding standards, performance guidelines and clean code practices for Java and Spring Boot.
• Ensure clear, maintainable inline code documentation and technical notes to aid future maintenance and production support.
• Continuously enhance skills in Java 21(and newer versions), Spring Boot, microservices patterns, caching and database technologies relevant to the platform.

Actionable

• Develop and unit-test assigned user stories using Java 21 and Spring Boot, ensuring adherence to coding standards, performance, security and compliance metrics.
• Implement REST APIs, integrations and batch jobs with adequate unit and basic integration test coverage.
• Participate in daily scrums and other Agile ceremonies, providing accurate status, risk/issue highlighting and estimates.
• Participate in team code reviews, both as reviewer and reviewee, and incorporate feedback promptly.
• Analyse, debug and resolve defects across development, SIT and UAT environments within agreed SLAs.

Key Skills

• Strong hands-on coding experience in backend development.
• At least 5+ years of experience developing APIs and microservices using Java (preferably Java 11+; Java 21 experience strongly preferred).
• Deep experience with Spring Boot for building RESTful services, including dependency injection, validation, configuration management and actuator.
• Strong understanding of REST API design, versioning, error handling and documentation (e.g., OpenAPI/Swagger).
• Experience with caching frameworks (e.g., Redis, Caffeine) and patterns to improve performance and scalability.
• Experience with SQL databases and ORM frameworks (JPA/Hibernate), plus exposure to NoSQL/persistence patterns as applicable.
• Good understanding of microservices architecture concepts such as service discovery, configuration management, resilience and API gateways.
• Familiarity with Git, CI/CD pipelines and containerization (Docker; Kubernetes exposure is a plus).
• Awareness of security best practices for APIs (authentication, authorization, OWASP considerations) in a banking or financial services environment is preferred.
