Job Description

Role & responsibilities : An ETL Test Engineer is responsible for validating data integration processes, ensuring data accuracy, transformation logic correctness, and smooth ETL workflows from source systems to target systems.

Key Responsibilities

1. ETL Testing & Validation
ETL Test Engineers are responsible for testing and validating data extraction, transformation, and loading processes from various sources to target data warehouses or databases. They ensure that data is accurately migrated and transformed according to business rules. This includes verifying data completeness, accuracy, consistency, and integrity.

2. Designing Test Cases and Test Plans
They create detailed test plans, test cases, and test scenarios based on ETL design documents, source-to-target mappings, and business requirements. Test cases cover functional validation, boundary conditions, and performance aspects of ETL workflows.

3. Data Verification and Reconciliation
A core responsibility is to perform data reconciliation between source and target systems to confirm that transformation logic is correctly applied. This includes row counts, field-level validation, aggregations, and identifying discrepancies or anomalies.

4. Automation Testing
ETL Test Engineers may implement automation scripts or frameworks for repetitive validation tasks using SQL, Python, or ETL automation tools to increase efficiency and reduce manual testing time.

5. Performance and Load Testing
They often validate ETL performance, including processing large volumes of data within expected timeframes, ensuring that ETL jobs execute efficiently under load without data loss or degradation.

6. Reporting and Defect Management
The engineer identifies, logs, and tracks defects related to ETL processes, collaborating with ETL developers and data architects to resolve issues. Detailed testing reports and documentation are maintained for audits and quality assurance.

7. Compliance and Best Practices
ETL Test Engineers ensure adherence to data governance, standards, and compliance requirements. They validate that sensitive data is handled properly and transformations comply with business and regulatory rules.

Required Skills and Tools

  • Technical Skills: Strong SQL, PL/SQL, shell scripting, Python/R for test automation, and knowledge of ETL tools like Informatica, Talend, DataStage, or AWS Glue.
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to understand complex data structures, relationships, and transformation logic.
  • Attention to Detail: Crucial for spotting inconsistencies, edge cases, and potential data quality issues.
  • Knowledge of Databases: Experience with relational databases (Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL) and possibly big data technologies (Hive, Snowflake, Hadoop).
  • Testing Concepts: Understanding of functional, regression, integration, and performance testing in the ETL context.

Additional Insights

ETL Test Engineers also collaborate closely with business analysts and data engineers to ensure business requirements translate accurately into ETL processes. They play a critical role in ensuring that business intelligence reports and dashboards reflect correct and reliable data for decision-making. Proactive monitoring and continual improvement of ETL processes are also part of senior ETL test roles. In summary, an ETL Test Engineer ensures data integrity, accuracy, and reliability across the ETL lifecycle, making them essential for secure and high-quality data processing in any data-driven organization

Preferred candidate profile : An ideal ETL testing candidate combines technical expertise in data warehousing, SQL proficiency, analytical skills, and attention to detail to ensure accurate data extraction, transformation, and loading processes
