The National Housing Bank (NHB) is an apex financial institution for housing in India, established on July 09, 1988, under the National Housing Bank Act, 1987. It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). NHB's primary mandate is to operate as a principal agency to promote Housing Finance Institutions (HFIs) at both local and regional levels, provide financial and other support to these institutions, and regulate Housing Finance Companies (HFCs). It plays a crucial role in developing and ensuring a sound, healthy, and viable housing finance system in the country.
