Job Description
Sr. Manager - EHS Role Purpose: To design, promote, and implement environmental protection, health, safety, and security programs within the plant/unit. Ensures compliance with legal regulations and corporate standards, fosters a proactive safety culture, and supports continuous improvement of EHS performance. May also oversee plant/site security operations, depending on organizational scope.
Key Responsibilities
- EHS Strategy Governance Develop, implement, and maintain the Unit/Plant EHS strategy, aligned with corporate EHS policies and local regulations. Lead and manage the EHS management system (ISO 14001, ISO 45001, environmental permits, audits). Establish and maintain emergency preparedness and crisis management plans. Conduct regular EHS governance reviews with plant leadership.
- Regulatory Compliance Monitor and interpret regulatory and statutory changes related to environment, health, safety, and security within the plant/site. Ensure full compliance with national, state, and local laws (environmental permits, hazardous waste, occupational safety standards, fire safety). Interface with regulatory authorities during inspections, audits, and certifications.
- Risk Prevention Control Identify potential EHS risks and hazards through risk assessments (HIRA, JSA, environmental impact assessments). Implement preventive and corrective actions to eliminate or reduce risks. Ensure proper functioning of incident reporting, investigation, and root cause analysis systems. Oversee process safety management (PSM) in units handling high risk operations.
- Environmental Management Lead initiatives related to: Waste management disposal Air water quality compliance Hazardous chemical handling Energy optimization and carbon reduction Track environmental KPIs and drive sustainability initiatives.
- Health Safety Oversight Maintain strong operational controls for: Safe work procedures (LOTO, work at height, confined spaces) PPE management Occupational health programs medical surveillance Contractor safety management Ensure adherence to safety standards during production, maintenance, and project activities.
- Training Culture Development Promote a proactive safety culture through awareness initiatives and continuous communication. Conduct regular EHS training modules for all employees and contractors. Lead plant-wide safety campaigns, toolbox meetings, safety weeks, and leadership walks.
- Security Management (if in scope) Oversee plant/site security operations, including gate control, visitor management, surveillance systems, emergency response, and security audits. Manage relationships with third-party security service providers.
- Performance Monitoring and Reporting Define EHS KPIs and provide monthly/quarterly reports to management. Analyze trends in incidents, near-misses, environmental deviations, and propose improvement actions. Benchmark performance against corporate standards and industry best practices.
- Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) Number of Near-Miss Reports / Engagement rate Regulatory compliance score (zero non-compliance) Environmental KPIs (waste, emissions, resource usage) Audit results (internal/external) Emergency preparedness scorecard Contractor safety performance Security incident reduction (if applicable)

Skills Competencies
- Technical Skills Strong knowledge of Environmental laws, Occupational Safety regulations, and compliance frameworks. Familiarity with ISO 14001, ISO 45001, PSM, HIRA, JSA, Fire Safety Codes. Experience in hazardous materials management and environmental reporting. Ability to conduct incident investigations (RCA, 5-Why, fishbone).
- Leadership Competencies Strong communication and influencing skills. Ability to lead cultural change and safety mindset transformation. Crisis and emergency management skills. Cross-functional collaboration with production, maintenance, HR, and engineering.
Educational Experience Requirements
- Bachelor's/Master's degree in Environmental Science, Industrial Safety, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related fields.
- 8-15 years of experience in EHS roles in manufacturing, logistics, chemical, or industrial environments.
- Certifications such as NEBOSH/ IOSH/ ADIS/ DISH strongly preferred. Experience working with regulators and auditors.
