Sr Database Administrator

To support our continued growth, we are seeking an experienced MySQL Database Administrator to join our Cloud Operations organization. In this role, you will work closely with Operations and Engineering teams to design, build, and maintain mission-critical, highly scalable database environments that power the Five9 platform.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain highly available, high-performing MySQL databases.
• Support production databases across global data centers.
• Support MySQL database replication and clustering.
• Provide database reports to business units including Finance, Operations, Customer Success, and Legal.
• Monitor production databases, perform performance tuning, and manage backup and recovery processes.
• Troubleshoot database issues, ensuring high system availability.
• Develop database tools to automate existing database administration tasks.
• Follow established change management processes for all production database changes.

Required Qualifications Skills

• 5+ years of hands-on experience designing and administering MySQL databases in a production support environment.
• Demonstrated experience installing, configuring, and performance tuning Percona Server and Percona XtraDB Cluster in production environments.
• Experience monitoring database availability, saturation, and performance to proactively identify and resolve emerging issues.
• Strong understanding of MySQL replication, including master-master replication and Percona XtraDB Cluster replication topologies.
• Experience diagnosing and troubleshooting complex database issues in collaboration with engineering and operations teams.
• Experience with physical and logical backup and restore strategies, including Percona XtraBackup.
• Proficiency with slow query analysis and execution plan (EXPLAIN) optimization.
• Experience with performance analysis (I/O, CPU, etc.) and optimization techniques including index and and schema redesign.
• Ability to monitor databases and proactively detect emerging issues such as performance bottlenecks, locking, and inefficient usage.
• Solid understanding of Linux (CentOS and Ubuntu), including the ability to inspect hardware performance and load indicators.
• 2+ years of experience with Python and/or Shell scripting.
• Ability to multitask and perform effectively in a fast-paced production environment.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills with the ability to work effectively across teams.

Additional Desirable Experience

• Experience with Microsoft SQL Server administration, including Always On Availability Groups.
• Familiarity with configuration management and automation tooling, including Ansible.
• Experience with infrastructure as code using Terraform.
• Proficiency with Python scripting for database automation, tooling, and operational workflows.
• Experience working in Google Cloud Platform and Amazon Web Services.
