Senior Solution Architect

We are looking for a Senior Solution Architect with a strong focus on Payments Architecture to help design and deliver secure, scalable, and cost-effective technology solutions across our fuel, EV charging, and convenience retail business.

Youll focus on detailed solution design and technical architecture within the payments domain, supporting both consumer-facing and in-store ecosystems. This includes POS systems, payment gateways, and integrations with acquirers, issuers, and third-party providers. You will design end-to-end payment flows (authorization, clearing, settlement) and ensure alignment with industry standards and security requirements.

This role is ideal for an experienced Architect who brings strong hands-on expertise, thrives in delivery-focused environments, and is ready to take ownership of solutions for focused projects or components within larger products/programmes. You will work closely with technical leads and delivery teams to translate complex payment requirements into robust digital solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Solution Design & Delivery

• Design detailed, modular solution architectures with a strong emphasis on payment systems and integrations.
• Lead the solution design for small-to-medium payment initiatives or contribute to larger architecture workstreams.
• Collaborate with engineering teams to ensure high-quality implementation aligned with architecture principles and payment domain requirements.
• Deliver Solution Architecture artefacts including sequence diagrams, payment flows, interface contracts, deployment models, and integration designs.

Technology & Standards

• Apply MACH principles (Microservices, API-first, Cloud-native, Headless) and cloud-native design approaches, ideally with AWS services.
• Ensure payment solutions align with industry standards such as PCI-DSS, EMV, ISO 8583, and tokenization practices.
• Build foundational elements like security, observability, resiliency, and integration into all solutions.
• Work within defined architecture standards, helping evolve reusable patterns and frameworks within the payments domain.

Collaboration & Delivery Enablement

• Partner with business and technology teams to understand payment requirements and define pragmatic solutions.
• Support agile delivery teams by providing ongoing architectural guidance during implementation.
• Translate architectural decisions into actionable technical designs and development tasks.

Compliance & Risk Management

• Embed security and compliance standards (e.g., PCI-DSS, encryption, data protection) into all solution builds.
• Identify risks in payment processing and integrations early, proposing mitigation strategies aligned with governance frameworks.

Qualifications

Technical & Professional Skills

• Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent experience.
• At least 3-5 years in hands-on solution architecture or technical leadership roles.
• Strong experience crafting and delivering payment architectures in retail or digital ecosystems.
• Deep understanding of digital payments and retail payment systems, including authorization, clearing, and settlement flows.
• Experience integrating with POS systems, payment gateways, acquirers, issuers, and third-party providers.
• Familiarity with payment standards and protocols such as PCI-DSS, EMV, ISO 8583, and tokenization.
• Exposure to modern payment trends including contactless payments, digital wallets, real-time payments, and API-driven ecosystems.
• Experience designing solutions using cloud-native architectures, ideally on AWS.
• Proficient in integration design patterns, API architecture (REST, event-driven), and microservices.
• Good understanding of architecture domains (application, data, infrastructure, integration, and security).
• Knowledge of DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and agile delivery models.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to evaluate trade-offs and present clear recommendations.
• Experience in one or more relevant domains: Payment processing, Retail Site/Store systems, EV charging, Supply chain, or Consumer-facing applications (web/mobile).

Desirable

• Experience in Mobility & Convenience (M&C) or retail payments ecosystems.
• Exposure to emerging payment technologies or trends.
• Familiarity with IFSF (International Forecourt Standards Forum) standards for fuel and retail payment environments (preferred but not mandatory).
• Certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect (preferred but not mandatory).
