About The Role :

We're hiring a Chrome Extension engineer with deep, hands-on Manifest V3 production experience to lead the migration of our extension from MV2 to MV3 and build the on-device filtering engine that replaces it - eliminating the cloud round-trip for 80% of filtering decisions on student Chromebooks worldwide. Experience with other browser extensions (Firefox, Edge, Safari) is a strong plus. You will also help shape Securly's strategy as Google's Filter & Monitor platform pushes ChromeOS toward native Content Filtering APIs - real technical ownership with influence over where the product goes next.

What You'll Own :

- Lead the MV2 to MV3 migration : scoping legacy surface area, sequencing the cutover, and retiring deprecated APIs without breaking filtering coverage.

- Architecture of the local policy cache : delta sync protocol, TTL management, cache invalidation, graceful cloud fallback.

- The onboard filtering decision engine inside the MV3 service worker - domain matching, URL categorization, iframe detection, allow/block logic.

- Bypass prevention and browser security hardening - same-origin policy, CSP, CORS, iframe sandboxing, content script/page context boundaries, timing-attack defense.

- Tracking Google's Filter & Monitor / ChromeOS Content Filtering API evolution and writing architectural memos on strategic implications.

- Performance budgets - keeping extension overhead negligible on low-end student Chromebooks.

- Mentoring L3/L4 engineers through code reviews, pairing, and security model design.

- Full incident lifecycle ownership for your system as part of on-call rotation.

Must-Have Skills :

- 5+ years of expert-level TypeScript/JavaScript - async/await, Promises, event-driven architecture, memory management in long-running processes.

- Deep production experience with Chrome Extensions (Manifest V3) - service workers, content scripts, chrome.storage, declarativeNetRequest/webRequest APIs.

- Hands-on MV2 to MV3 migration experience - background page to service worker conversion, remote code restrictions, permissions model changes.

- Strong grasp of the browser security model - same-origin policy, CSP, CORS, iframe sandboxing.

- Security-first architecture mindset - able to map a threat model before writing code.

- Offline-first / local caching experience - delta sync, TTL design, cache invalidation, chrome.storage.local limits, IndexedDB.

- Strong written technical communication - ADRs, threat models, platform evaluation memos.

Good To Have :

- Experience building extensions for other browsers (Firefox, Edge, Safari).

- Performance profiling (Chrome DevTools) on low-memory devices.

- Web filtering / content classification experience.

- Awareness of ChromeOS Content Filtering APIs.

- Puppeteer, Playwright, or Selenium with extension testing.

- Kotlin (mobile filtering exposure).

- K-12 / EdTech domain familiarity.
