Role Summary
The Backend Engineer - Python is responsible for building, enhancing, and maintaining backend services and APIs within an established cloud-native, microservices architecture.
This role focuses on high-quality implementation, predictable delivery, and adherence to existing architectural standards, working from designs, patterns, and technical guidance defined by onshore leads.

Key Responsibilities
Build and maintain backend services and RESTful APIs aligned to existing architectural standards.

Implement business logic, data access layers, and integrations with internal and external systems.

Develop APIs following defined contracts, versioning, and error-handling guidelines.

Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code following agreed engineering best practices.

Contribute unit and integration tests to ensure functional correctness and regression safety.

Support feature delivery using pre-defined designs, tickets, and user stories.

Participate in code reviews, addressing feedback and improving overall code quality.

Troubleshoot backend issues using logs and diagnostics, escalating complex concerns appropriately.

Work within an Agile/Scrum team, contributing to sprint delivery and task estimates.

Follow established security, performance, and reliability guidelines.

Required Skills & Experience
Core Backend Engineering
3-6+ years of backend development experience.
Strong hands-on experience with Python or equivalent backend frameworks.
Solid understanding of REST API design, request/response models, and error handling.
Experience working with microservices-based architectures.

Cloud & Infrastructure Awareness
Hands-on experience deploying or running services on GCP or another hyperscaler (AWS/Azure).
Familiarity with managed databases (Cloud SQL, PostgreSQL, or equivalent).
Understanding of containerised workloads using Docker.
Exposure to Cloud Run, Kubernetes, or similar platforms.

Data & Integration
Strong SQL skills, including schema usage and query optimisation.
Experience integrating with external systems via APIs or messaging.
Awareness of backend reliability patterns: validation, idempotency, failure handling.

Quality & Delivery
Experience writing unit and integration tests for backend services. Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and Git-based workflows.
Comfortable delivering from clear requirements and technical guidance.

Ways of Working
Experience working in distributed/offshore delivery teams.
Clear communication of progress, blockers, and risks to onshore counterparts. Willingness to follow established standards rather than redefining architecture.
