Your role and responsibilities
In this role, we are looking for a Principal Architect Observability Platform to join our Industrial Automation Digital Industry Analytics / Research Development organization. The role requires a highly experienced technology leader with deep expertise in cloud-native architectures, distributed systems, and enterprise observability platforms. The candidate will be responsible for defining the technical vision, architectural direction, and engineering standards for a large-scale observability and operational health platform supporting ABBs industrial digital products across cloud and edge environments.
The work model for the role is: Hybrid
This role is contributing to the Industrial Automation Digital Industry Analytics / Research Development function in India (Bengaluru). Main stakeholders include Product Management, Platform Engineering teams, DevOps/SRE teams, Cloud and Edge Engineering teams, Customer Operations teams, and Security and Governance organizations.
You will be mainly accountable for:
  • Provide technical leadership and architectural guidance for the design, evolution, and governance of an enterprise-grade observability platform supporting metrics, logs, traces, alerts, dashboards, and operational reliability insights across cloud and edge deployments.
  • Lead architecture reviews, establish engineering standards, and guide teams through complex technical decisions and trade-offs involving cloud-native technologies, distributed systems, and hybrid architectures.
  • Define and drive the observability platform roadmap by introducing innovative and scalable architecture patterns that enhance platform reliability, operational excellence, and business outcomes.
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Platform Engineering, DevOps/SRE, Customer Operations, and Security teams to enable seamless onboarding of products, platforms, and customer solutions into the observability ecosystem.
  • Apply software and platform architecture principles to the analysis, design, development, validation, and operational readiness of large-scale observability solutions.
  • Lead and govern the end-to-end software and platform lifecycle, from requirements gathering and architecture definition through implementation, deployment, adoption, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Recommend and drive strategic platform capabilities based on customer needs, operational insights, and emerging technology trends, leveraging modern architecture approaches to improve scalability, reliability, and observability.
  • Establish reusable architectural patterns, reference implementations, and best practices to ensure consistency, maintainability, and operational excellence across engineering teams.
  • Ensure delivery of secure, robust, and user-centric observability solutions through telemetry-driven insights, continuous feedback loops, and close collaboration with cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Champion reliability engineering principles, observability best practices, and architectural governance to promote operational resilience and high platform availability.
  • Mentor and influence engineering teams by fostering a culture of technical excellence, innovation, collaboration, and sound architectural decision-making.
Qualifications for the role
  • 12+ years of experience in software engineering, platform engineering, and architecture roles, with a proven track record of designing and scaling complex cloud-native systems.
  • Strong expertise in cloud-native architecture, distributed systems design, and enterprise observability platforms within industrial digitalization, SaaS, or enterprise software domains.
  • Extensive experience with enterprise observability technologies including New Relic, Dynatrace, Datadog, Splunk, Grafana, and similar platforms for monitoring, diagnostics, and operational intelligence.
  • Deep understanding of Azure-native monitoring capabilities including Azure Monitor, Application Insights, Log Analytics, Alerts, and Workbooks.
  • Proven expertise with Kubernetes environments, preferably Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), including containerized microservices architectures and cloud-native deployment models.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Open Telemetry, Prometheus, distributed tracing technologies, centralized logging frameworks, and telemetry collection and processing pipelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to architect and govern large-scale observability ecosystems supporting highly available and resilient distributed applications.
  • Strong knowledge of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles, operational excellence practices, and reliability engineering methodologies.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence technical direction across diverse teams and organizational levels.
  • Passion for mentoring engineering teams, driving innovation, and establishing engineering best practices that improve reliability and operational effectiveness.
  • Proven experience leading architecture reviews, establishing technology standards, and driving technical governance within enterprise environments.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
