About the Company

Chargebee is a leading subscription billing and revenue management platform that powers some of the world's fastest-growing brands, including Calendly, Hopin, Pret A Manger, Freshworks, Okta, and Study.com. Thousands of SaaS and subscription-first businesses rely on Chargebee to process billions of dollars in revenue annually.

Headquartered in San Francisco, Chargebee operates with a global, remote-first team of 500+ employees across India, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Australia, and the United States.

Backed by over $480 million in funding from Accel, Tiger Global, Insight Partners, Steadview Capital, and Sapphire Ventures, Chargebee is on a mission to redefine subscription revenue operations—not just for ourselves, but for every business operating on a recurring revenue model.

Our teams build innovative, high-quality software that enables customers to scale and grow through a best-in-class subscription management platform.

About the Role

We are seeking a Technical Lead – Backend Engineering who thrives in fast-paced environments and is driven by execution and impact. In this role, you will lead initiatives to scale core systems, balance existing business logic with new innovation, and ensure high reliability and performance across mission-critical components.

You will take ownership of complex technical challenges, collaborate across teams, and engage in both technical and customer-facing discussions. This is an opportunity to solve problems at scale and directly influence the revenue engines of global businesses.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver with ownership: Drive end-to-end delivery of backend (and relevant frontend) modules with a strong focus on quality and execution.
  • Scale systems effectively: Enhance existing architectures through thoughtful design and targeted refactoring, avoiding unnecessary rewrites.
  • Build for performance: Design and develop high-performance, resilient services using Java and Spring Boot.
  • Ensure production excellence: Partner with DevOps to implement robust monitoring, alerting, and operational best practices on AWS.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally: Work closely with engineering, product, and customer-facing teams to align technical solutions with business needs.
  • Mentor and lead: Provide technical guidance, conduct meaningful code reviews, and foster a culture of proactive problem-solving.

Requirements

Technical Expertise

  • 7–10 years of backend engineering experience with strong recent hands-on expertise in Java and Spring Boot.
  • Proven experience building and scaling systems with high throughput, low latency, and event-driven architectures.
  • Solid understanding of AWS services such as EC2, S3, RDS, SQS, and VPC.
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and performance optimization.

Leadership & Execution

  • Strong ownership mindset with a track record of delivering end-to-end features.
  • Pragmatic engineering approach—focused on impact, simplicity, and execution over over-engineering.
  • Experience mentoring engineers, leading design discussions, and managing technical debt.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence technical decisions and align with business goals.
  • Comfortable engaging in customer-facing discussions when required.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively in cross-functional and remote/hybrid environments.
