Overview

Indian Railways, officially known as Indian Railways (IR), is a statutory body under the ownership of the Ministry of Railways, Government of India that operates India's national railway system. It is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the country's rail transport infrastructure, including passenger and freight services. It is one of the world's largest railway networks, comprising over 123,236 km (76,575 mi) of total track and 7,325 stations as of 31 March 2023. Routes are electrified with 25 kV AC electric traction while minor sections are also served by 1.5 kV DC electric traction and diesel locomotives. IR operates over 22,224 trains daily. As of March 2023, IR's rolling stock consisted of 3,232 electric locomotives, 5,752 diesel locomotives and 74 steam locomotives.
