Position : General Manager Business Development, Mergers & Acquisitions (India Business)

Reporting To: India Business Head

Location: Mumbai (Western Suburbs)

Company: Our Client is a specialty pharmaceutical company focused on developing, manufacturing and marketing quality pharmaceutical formulations across India and global markets. In India, the company has established leadership across specialty segments including Cardiology, Diabetology, Dermatology, Ophthalmology and Pain Management, supported by strong scientific capabilities, customer-centricity and innovation.

As part of its long-term growth strategy, the company is focused on accelerating expansion through strategic in-licensing, acquisitions, portfolio enhancement, strategic alliances and business partnerships.

Position Summary: The General Manager Business Development, Mergers & Acquisitions will lead the identification, evaluation, negotiation and execution of strategic growth opportunities for the India Business. The role will be responsible for driving inorganic growth through acquisitions, product and brand acquisitions, licensing arrangements, strategic partnerships, co-marketing, co-promotion and portfolio expansion initiatives.

The incumbent will work closely with the India Business Head and cross-functional leadership teams to identify opportunities that strengthen company's market position, enhance the specialty portfolio and create sustainable long-term value.

Key Responsibilities

1. Business Development Strategy

  • Develop and execute the Business Development strategy aligned with the India Business growth roadmap.
  • Identify new growth opportunities across specialty therapy areas and adjacent healthcare segments.
  • Evaluate emerging business models, strategic partnerships and collaboration opportunities.
  • Build a robust pipeline of licensing, acquisition and strategic alliance opportunities.

2. Mergers & Acquisitions

  • Identify acquisition opportunities involving pharmaceutical companies, brands, product portfolios and strategic assets.
  • Lead end-to-end M&A transactions from opportunity identification through integration.
  • Conduct commercial, strategic and financial evaluation of acquisition targets.
  • Coordinate valuation, due diligence, negotiations and transaction execution with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develop post-merger integration plans to ensure seamless business continuity and value realization.

3. Licensing & Strategic Alliances

  • Identify opportunities for in-licensing, co-marketing, co-promotion and distribution partnerships.
  • Negotiate commercial agreements with domestic and international pharmaceutical companies.
  • Establish long-term strategic collaborations that enhance company's therapeutic portfolio.
  • Manage alliance relationships to maximize mutual business outcomes.

4. Portfolio Expansion

  • Evaluate market gaps and identify products, brands and technologies that strengthen company's India portfolio.
  • Recommend new therapy entries based on market attractiveness, competitive intensity and commercial potential.
  • Assess opportunities for lifecycle management and portfolio optimization.

5. Market Intelligence & Opportunity Assessment

  • Monitor pharmaceutical industry trends, competitive activity, regulatory changes and emerging healthcare opportunities.
  • Analyze market size, growth potential, competitive landscape and customer needs.
  • Develop strategic business cases supported by commercial and financial analysis.
  • Present actionable recommendations to senior leadership.

6. Financial & Commercial Evaluation

  • Prepare business models, financial projections and investment proposals.
  • Conduct valuation of acquisition targets, licensing opportunities and strategic partnerships.
  • Assess commercial viability, return on investment and strategic fit.
  • Support investment committee presentations and Board approvals.

7. Due Diligence

Lead cross-functional due diligence covering:

Identify business risks and develop mitigation strategies.

8. Negotiation & Transaction Management

  • Lead commercial negotiations with promoters, pharmaceutical companies and strategic partners.
  • Structure mutually beneficial commercial agreements.
  • Coordinate with legal advisors for transaction documentation.
  • Ensure timely closure of strategic transactions.

9. Cross-functional Collaboration

  • Develop robust governance processes for evaluating business opportunities.
  • Present investment proposals to Executive Leadership and Board Committees.
  • Track post-deal performance against approved business cases.
  • Drive continuous improvement in Business Development processes.

Education

Essential

  • MBA (Marketing / Finance / Strategy)

Preferred

  • B.Pharm / M.Pharm
  • MBBS with MBA
  • CA / CFA or equivalent financial qualification will be an added advantage.

Experience

  • 15 to 20 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Minimum 8 to 10 years in Business Development, Strategic Planning or M&A.
  • Demonstrated experience in licensing, acquisitions, portfolio management or strategic alliances.
  • Strong understanding of the Indian pharmaceutical market and specialty therapy segments.
  • Experience in commercial evaluation, financial modelling and transaction management.
  • Prior exposure to integration of acquired businesses or brands will be preferred.
