Job Title: Associate Consultant – General Anaesthesia
Department: Anaesthesia
Reporting To: Senior Consultant / Director – Anaesthesia
Experience: 5+ years of post MD/DNB experience in General Anaesthesia within a multispecialty or tertiary care hospital
Qualification:
- MD/DNB in Anaesthesiology from a recognized institution
- Valid State Medical Council/NMC registration
- Fellowship in Critical Care, Regional Anaesthesia, Pain Management, or Cardiac/Neuro Anaesthesia will be an added advantage
Job Summary
The Associate Consultant – General Anaesthesia is responsible for providing comprehensive perioperative anaesthesia care across multiple surgical specialties. The role includes pre-operative evaluation, administration of anaesthesia, intraoperative patient management, post-operative pain management, emergency response, and ICU support while ensuring patient safety and adherence to clinical protocols.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive pre-anaesthetic evaluations and assess patients for surgical fitness.
- Formulate individualized anaesthesia plans based on patient condition and surgical requirements.
- Administer general, regional, and monitored anaesthesia safely for elective and emergency procedures.
- Monitor patients throughout surgery and manage any intraoperative complications.
- Provide post-operative monitoring, pain management, and recovery care.
- Participate in management of critically ill patients requiring airway management and ventilatory support.
- Respond promptly to emergency situations including trauma, code blue, obstetric emergencies, and difficult airway management.
- Support ICU and emergency department for critical patient care whenever required.
- Maintain accurate documentation of anaesthesia records and clinical notes.
Patient Care & Safety
- Ensure compliance with NABH, infection control, and patient safety standards.
- Follow WHO Surgical Safety Checklist and departmental protocols.
- Promote safe medication practices and anaesthesia equipment safety checks.
- Ensure informed consent and effective patient counselling regarding anaesthesia procedures.
Academic & Quality Responsibilities
- Participate in departmental CMEs, academic meetings, mortality & morbidity reviews, and case discussions.
- Guide and mentor junior residents and postgraduate trainees.
- Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, and protocol development.
- Stay updated with advances in anaesthesia techniques and evidence-based practices.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Coordinate effectively with surgeons, nursing staff, OT personnel, and ICU teams.
- Assist in OT scheduling and efficient utilization of operation theatres.
- Ensure proper maintenance and readiness of anaesthesia machines, monitors, and emergency equipment.
- Maintain compliance with hospital policies, accreditation standards, and documentation requirements.
Required Skills & Competencies
- Strong clinical expertise in general and regional anaesthesia.
- Proficiency in airway management, difficult airway algorithms, and resuscitation.
- Experience in perioperative critical care and emergency anaesthesia.
- Sound knowledge of anaesthesia equipment and monitoring systems.
- Excellent clinical judgment and decision-making abilities.
- Effective communication and multidisciplinary collaboration skills.
- Strong documentation and medical record management.
- Commitment to ethical medical practice and patient-centered care.
Preferred Experience
- Minimum 5+ years of post MD/DNB experience in General Anaesthesia at a tertiary care or multispecialty hospital.
- Experience across specialties including General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Urology, ENT, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Gastro Surgery, Oncology, Neurosciences, and Laparoscopic Surgery.
- Exposure to ICU, trauma care, and emergency anaesthesia will be preferred.
