Job Description
About the Role:
Avalara is a global leader in tax compliance automation, and we are on a mission to
simplify the business of tax. As an AI-first company, we are rapidly scaling our enterprise systems
and automation footprint, making this an incredible environment to drive measurable business
transformation.
In this role, you will be at the forefront of this evolution, translating complex business workflows
into well-defined, implementation-ready requirements for AI-enabled automation and agentic
workflows. Operating at the intersection of business process design, AI strategy, and technical
execution, you will work closely with AI Automation Engineers to shape an environment centered on
tools like n8n, Boomi, APIs, and event-driven systems. By elevating our documentation standards
and requirement clarity, you will directly improve delivery predictability and accelerate our AI-first
execution.
This is a full-time role with Avalara, offering a fully remote work arrangement across India.
What Your Responsibilities Will Be :
- Requirements & Process Analysis: You will partner with stakeholders and engineering team to gather, analyze, and document AI automation requirements.
- You will be responsible to map current and future-state processes to identify areas where AI or workflow automation can enhance speed, quality, and scale.
- Solution Definition: You will be required to break down complex workflows into structured use cases, defining decision points, human-in-the-loop steps, system interactions, event triggers, and API touchpoints.
- Creating detailed user stories and business rules that are ready for implementation.
- Data Analysis: You will have to analyze data flows and define field-level mappings, prompt requirements, exception scenarios, and reconciliation rules to ensure data.
- Quality & Governance: Challenge unclear requirements early to protect delivery timelines.
- Standardize requirement templates and documentation practices, ensuring processes and playbooks are left stronger and more scalable.
- Delivery Enablement: Participate in sprint planning and support UAT validation to ensure AI enabled workflows behave as intended across normal and exception scenarios.
- Education: B.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Experience: 8+ years of experience as a Business Systems Analyst or Techno-Functional
- Analyst, with hands-on experience in AI automation, enterprise workflows, system integrations, and APIs (e.g., n8n, Boomi).
- Technical Acumen: Strong understanding of Agentic AI, REST APIs, webhooks, JSON, data mapping concepts, and workflow orchestration patterns.
- AI Integration: Proven ability to identify AI opportunities within workflows and apply AI responsibly with strict attention to data privacy, security, and operational risk. You should demonstrate applied AI impact, using AI tools to accelerate process analysis and requirement validation.
- Collaboration: Experience interpreting technical design documents and working seamlessly with AI Automation Engineers, architects, and cross-functional teams to translate business needs into technical realities.
- Analytical Rigor: High standards for clarity and structured problem-solving to reduce ambiguity and downstream rework.
Within the first 12 months, this role will have:
- Enabled AI-native automation capabilities, including production-grade AI agents integrated into core workflows
- Improved automation reliability and reduced workflow failure rates and/or MTTR
- Standardized automation patterns, including AI-enabled orchestration patterns, adopted across new transformation initiatives
- Implemented measurable observability, including AI performance, business impact, and cost metrics
- Delivered AI-driven automation use cases that reduce manual effort, improve decision-making, or shorten process cycle time across multiple functions
- Raised execution standards across the automation team through mentorship, technical leadership, and AI capability development
AI Expectations: As an AI-first company, Avalara expects this role to embed AI into how automation and
transformation work is designed and executed.
This role will:
- Identify AI and automation opportunities within business workflows that improve efficiency, decision quality, and scalability
- Use AI tools to accelerate documentation drafting, process analysis, impact assessment, and requirement validation
- Ensure AI-enabled workflows, agents, and human-in-the-loop controls are documented with clear governance and traceability
- Partner with AI Automation Engineers and architects to define measurable AI-driven outcomes, evaluation criteria, and business impact
- Apply AI responsibly with attention to data privacy, security, compliance, and operational risk
- Demonstrating applied AI impact, not just tool familiarity is required.
- This role must demonstrate applied AI impact — not casual tool usage — and quantify improvements enabled by AI-driven automation and transformation.
