Job Description
The Zoo Architect is responsible for designing, planning, and overseeing the construction of zoo exhibits and facilities that balance animal welfare, visitor experience, and environmental sustainability. This role combines architectural expertise with knowledge of animal behaviour, habitat design, and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Design & Planning:
- Develop architectural plans for animal enclosures, visitor paths, service areas, veterinary and quarantine facilities.
- Ensure designs replicate natural habitats to support animal health and behavioural enrichment.
- Integrate sustainable and eco-friendly practices into all design work.
Project Management:
- Collaborate with zoologists, veterinarians, civil engineers, and landscape architects.
- Prepare construction documents, technical drawings, and 3D models using CAD/BIM software.
- Oversee construction progress to ensure adherence to approved designs, safety, and compliance standards.
Compliance & Standards:
- Ensure all designs meet local building codes, animal welfare regulations, and international zoological standards (e.g., CZA, WAZA, AZA).
- Conduct site visits and inspections to ensure functional and safe environments for animals, staff, and visitors.
Innovation & Visitor Experience:
- Design immersive exhibits and interpretive signage to enhance educational value and visitor engagement.
- Incorporate technologies like climate control, automated feeding systems, and interactive displays.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Bachelors or Master’s degree in Architecture (preferably with specialization or experience in landscape, environmental, or zoological design)
- 5–10 years of relevant experience in architectural design, with at least 2–3 years in zoo or wildlife habitat projects
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, or other architectural design tools
- Strong understanding of animal behaviour, environmental psychology, and sustainable design principles
- Excellent project management, communication, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills
Preferred:
- LEED certification or experience with green building standards
- Knowledge of international zoo design guidelines (e.g., CZA, AZA, EAZA, WAZA)
- Portfolio showcasing zoo, safari park, or nature-themed architectural projectsRole & responsibilities
