The Akshaya Patra Foundation is an Indian non-profit organization that operates a large-scale mid-day meal program across India. The foundation works in partnership with the Indian government, corporate donors, and individual philanthropists to deliver freshly cooked, wholesome meals to schoolchildren daily.
About Us
Founded in 2000 with the initial goal of feeding 1,500 children across five schools, The Akshaya Patra Foundation has grown into the world's largest not-for-profit mid-day meal program. Currently, it serves nutritious meals to over 2 million children in 24,070+ schools across 72 locations spanning 16 states and 2 Union Territories in India. Akshaya Patra's core mission is to eliminate classroom hunger by implementing the mid-day meal scheme in government and government-aided schools, as well as Anganwadis. The Foundation is dedicated to continuous improvement, focusing on reducing operational costs and expanding its reach to serve even more children. The organization operates primarily through a centralized kitchen model, leveraging technology and innovative processes to maximize efficiency and maintain the highest standards of hygiene in food preparation and delivery. Beyond providing meals, The Akshaya Patra Foundation also implements various outreach programs designed to promote education and improve the overall health and well-being of the children it serves, contributing to their holistic development.
